Hardback and red chagrin, spine with 4 nerves, First edition. The work includes 100 (of 103) large compositions modelled on the famous "Emblemata Horatiana" by Otto Vaenius - each accompanied by a title and a quatrain - a full-page portrait of the author, a faux-title bearing Daret's address, a cul-de-lampe repeated at the end of each part and numerous woodcut initials. This luxurious work, composed at the request of Cardinal Mazarin for the instruction of the young king Louis XIV, is one of the most beautiful books edited by the engraver Pierre Daret. Missing pages (33 and Jj), half a page torn out. Damage to the spine, headpieces, corners, scratches and small tears to the binding; wetness, stains, foxing, tears and missing parts.
