Giuseppe DE NITTIS (1846-1884) The lady in pink. Oil on cardboard. Not signed. 46 x 29 cm Scratches and small lacks. Provenance : Former Collection of the Dieterle Family (Jean then Martin Dieterle). Marie-Thérèse Ducharmes Collection. Gift from Martin Dieterle to Mrs. Ducharmes on July 31, 2007 (dedication by Martin Dieterle on the back). Born in Barletta, Puglia, Guiseppe de Nittis studied in Naples and left for Paris in 1867. After being influenced by the great master Gérôme, he frequented the passionate milieu of Japonism and met Philippe Burty and the Goncourts. At the invitation of Degas, he participated in the first exhibition of impressionist painters in 1874. His art is marked by a synthesis between the currents then in vogue: Japonism, Impressionism and Naturalism. "La Dame en Rose" shows the extreme elegance of the painter in his description of Parisian society in the 1880s. He is, moreover, as skillful a witness to the Parisians as to the city itself. The large light spot on the dress reflects the influence of Impressionism. Our painting belonged to the Dieterle family, as evidenced by the dedication on the back in the hand of Martin Dieterle, who owned several works by De Nittis.
