BAYONNE, seconde moitié du XVIIIème siècle
Hand candlestick in silver (950) with turned and ringed binet and a scalloped cup with five clasps and a molded edge highlighted with fillets, on a circular frame. The spatula grip decorated with scrolls, the reverse side engraved with a D. Goldsmith's hallmark [I.D.B.]: probably that of Jean-Baptiste DELANE or DE LANE, received Master in 1757 and still active in 1807 [attributed to this goldsmith by Mr. Jean Clarke de Dromentin]. BAYONNE Jurisdiction Mark [E under crown] probably for 1771 [Cf. Helft, 1968, p. 69, n° 197 and 198 / crown closed but without s]. Hallmark of BAYONNE [AB crowned] probably around 1770-1780. Weight : 197 g. - H. : 5.2 cm - Diam. cup : 10.5 cm. Scratches of use. A similar hand candlestick, by the same silversmith and dated 1781 [E under crown] in Bayonne, was sold at Christie's, May 4, 2016, #532. A hand candlestick of similar model, by the same silversmith and dated circa 1783-1784 [H under crown to s] in Bayonne, was presented at the sale of the furniture of the Château du Bois de la Motte in PLESLIN-TRIGAVOU (22490), directed by Adjug'art and Maître Tiphaine LE GRIGNOU, on October 28, 2022, n° 1153.
