PIAF Edith (1915-1963).
52 L.A.S. or L.A. (and 2 telegrams), 1951-1952 and n.d., to Louis dit "Toto" GÉRARDIN; about 140 pages in-8 or in-4, envelopes.
Very beautiful and important love correspondence to his lover the cyclist Toto Gérardin.
Two years after the death of Marcel Cerdan in October 1949, having an affair with André Pousse, and sinking into alcoholism, Edith Piaf fell in love with the cyclist Louis Gérardin (1912-1982), known as Toto, who was several times French speed champion. This intense, stormy and passionate relationship ended on July 29, 1952, when Piaf married Jacques Pills. With passion she proclaims her love for the one she calls his "master adored" and his "love blue. Piaf signs in turn "toimoi", "you on me", "your little piece", "your little piece that belongs to me", "poor me", "your queen", etc. 30 letters are dated between November 15, 1951 and September 18, 1952. Most of the letters, with approximate spelling, are accompanied by their envelope, some addressed to "Mr. Nicola", or "Nicolas Cherry" or to Louis Gérardin, one to "Mr. Ma Merveille rue du Bonheur à Amour éternelle (Paradis)"; plus a letter from Bichette Gérardin (Louis' wife), as well as 2 telegrams, one from "Dédé" [André Pousse] and the other from "Maryse Suzy". Throughout these many letters, Edith Piaf, on tour in Boulognesur-Mer, Lyon and Marseille, never ceases to cry out her love, shares her good resolutions, her dreams, her plans but also her anxieties about this love that she senses is ephemeral. She evokes several times some of his songs but also several of his relatives: André Pousse (known as Dede), Ginou Richer known as Ginette, Charles Aznavour who is then his secretary and who wrote Jezabel, as well as his impresario Louis Barrier. Separated for the first time from her Toto, she wrote to him from Boulogne-sur-Mer on January 15, 1952: "My darling, I think I should also tell you that no man has ever taken me as much as you have, and I think I am making love for the first time. [...] You must sleep my sweet darling, how I will miss your body your beautiful thighs and the softness of your skin, your pretty buttocks darling ... yes I am getting to become sensual! ".... A few weeks later, she asks him to help her to improve: "You will be my little darling teacher that I will listen blindly like a master that I worship. You will see what I can do, miracles, you cannot suspect what I am capable of, there was Jeanne Darc, who could have believed that a simple woman would do such great things, she was for the love of war, I am for the love of you [...] I have always envied organized women [...] but I never found the strength to do it.I always envied organized women [...] but I never found the joint, now I think I'm beginning to understand where to start, with your help I'll quickly get what you want, and I won't change anymore, the day I went from Piaf to Edith Piaf I didn't go backwards"... For Piaf a new life is taking shape. On February 6, she declared to draw "a curtain on the past. She will give up alcohol: "You will see how docile I will be, I will really be your wife and you will have all the rights over me [...] you spotted me in time [...After Lyon, she wrote to him from Marseille, evoking two of his songs: "Tonight I sang Plus bleu que tes yeux, your hymn, it seemed to me that I saw you there before me [...] I also sang C'est d'la faute a tes yeux I almost made a repertoire for my love! The next day, she sent him two letters, one at ten minutes to twelve, the other at a quarter past one. In the first one she tells her "great man" of her wish to have a child: "I have an appointment with Laënec for this question on my return from Marseille". In the second, she evokes again Plus bleu que tes yeux : "I have to sing it well because since the first night people shout bravos, maybe they feel all the love I put in it, it's really good to sing this song, it's my declaration of love of every night that flies to you "... She wants to become a woman "organized with a well-ordered interior", does her accounts, and dreams of a future "gold and blue", of a house "blue as my love" and plans to buy a land in Boulogne. She also decides to take care of herself: "I am making me one of these astiquage, you are not going to return in front of the beauty which is going to return to you; the Rita Hayworth has quoted nothing! For girl you are going to have some, besides I do not know until which point I am not going to take part has a contest of beauty ". (February 19).
She prays ardently to become his "wife before God", but without too many illusions: "if I want to keep you, it is that I know
