ROUAULT GEORGES (1871-1958).
Cirque de l'étoile filante (Paris, Ambroise Vollard, 1938); in-folio, frontispiece, [4 ff. (first 2 blank)]-[168 pp.-[4 ff. (the last blank)], 16 plates; paperback, filled printed cover, grey cloth slipcase with title-piece on the back. First edition, printed at 280 copies, of this remarkable work designed by Georges ROUAULT and published by Ambroise Vollard. A true tribute to the clowns and acrobats that the artist never stopped painting, the book is illustrated with 73 original woodcuts, 13 of which are full-page, and 17 original aquatints in color out of the text. One of 215 copies on Montval laid paper. Precious copy accompanied in a separate slipcase by an original model of the book, bearing some annotations by Ambroise Vollard and other collaborators of the project. It contains practically no illustrations. There is also a handwritten table giving on 2 pages the "List and dimensions of the woodcuts to be engraved", and 2 sheet proofs of pages 75 to 78, one of which bears autograph corrections by Rouault. This model has been placed in a cardboard folder of an architectural album and in a modern canvas slipcase. A very well preserved copy, despite three plates being uncropped and discharges on the leaves opposite the aquatints. The 8th plate which should be on page 64 has been placed opposite page 32. A duplicate of the title and the justification are included in the book.
