ROUAULT GEORGES (1871-1958).
13 L.A.S. "G. Rouault" or "Georges Rouault" (6 unsigned) and 1 L.S., 1926-1929, to Louis PORTERET; about 20 pages in various formats including 2 postcards. Correspondence to the editor of his Legendary Landscapes (1929). In addition to the preparation of the collection, Rouault speaks of his participation as an engraver and writer in the review Les Funambules (directed by his friend André Girard and published by Porteret, this review had only one issue, published on December 1, 1926, for which Rouault gave three texts and two engravings). He also mentions his financial problems with several financial backers, including Étienne de Jouvencel. "Tell G[irard] frankly once and for all. He writes four pages in which he proclaims his friendship for me. I should be very touched and I am not quite, without wanting to hurt his feelings. [...] The slightest gesture, I do not say of humility, that is too much, but of cordial and childlike simplicity of a faithful heart touches me more than all the speeches, even if they are very eloquent. I no longer believe in words. I follow the instinctive and primordial interest of the individual. I am an old Chinese - from the old China born in Paris-Île-de-France-Belleville: a singular alloy. An old monkey who was not taught to make a face and who was born making it. The danger with me [...] it is to believe that I can arrange myself of an unspecified Russian salad, I cannot take bladders for lanterns, the light for darkness, the heart for an unspecified viscera, the spirit for a heavy stone, the amiable grimace of the young baboons born malignant for the smile of Reims "... December 4, 1926. Instructions to correct the list of poems... March 3, 1929. "I have just made a conclusive test. Give me a little more generous blanks - not a lot - either by increasing the size of the book and keeping the paper if it is ordered for the next work, or by recomposing, which I would like to avoid [...] but the goal and the stakes are worth it, it is to offer you again the 45 lamp-ends. Let none of the blanks be less than 7 or 8 centimeters and I will give you your business. What is needed is that my drawing no longer arrives in the letters - that it is separated from them by a blank"... These works Legendary landscapes plus Faubourg made me put back many other things that I had to give before my departure from Paris [...] from there with the heat an effort quite contrary to a good hygiene of the liver "... "I want to compose each page. I have never accepted that a question of date could risk disgracing me artistically speaking" .... "It was never agreed that I would do the caps on the contract or the models - but now that I have put the architecture back in place - a page is like a house, no more, no less, (that sounds pretentious but for me I know what I mean) so you will kindly let me mess up even the writing - even if your printers grumble, it doesn't matter, - and balance it out"... Etc. 3 letters dictated by Rouault to his daughter Isabelle are attached.
