Michel-Ferdinand d'Albret d'Ailly, duke of Chaulnes, represented as Hercules. Black stone, blur and white highlights. 41,8 x 32,2 cm. Spots and freckles. Michel Ferdinand d'Albert d'Ailly (1714-1769), lieutenant-general governor of Picardy. Reprise of the portrait of the duke of Chaulnes as Hercules (1746) exhibited at the Salon of 1747 kept in the Louvre Museum (See Catalogue of the exhibition Jean Marc Nattier of the Château de Versailles et de Trianon, 1999-2000, n°456, pp.185-188 - RMN 1999). Provenance : According to a family tradition, this study comes from the former collection of Camille Groult and would have been offered by his grandson as a wedding gift to the current owner in 1957.
