Giovanni Francesco ROMANELLI (Viterbe 1610-id. 1662)
Study of a young man's head. Black stone, blur and white highlights. Glued on sheet. At the bottom left in pen and brown ink: 4. 23,5 x 20,5 cm. Preparatory study for the figure of Pâris for the fresco in the Galerie Mazarine - now the Bibliothèque Nationale. Because of its size and composition, it is one of the only detailed studies, if not the only one, found for this setting. If the overall sketches of G. F. Romanelli in red chalk are known, published and preserved in the prestigious public institution, none of them takes for object a particular character. This is not the case with this work, which raises the question of whether it was simply a working document transposed onto the fresco or - because of the refinement of its execution - one of the studies submitted to Cardinal Mazarin for approval during the 1644 commission.
