Oil on canvas of oval shape. 63,5 x 54 cm. On the reverse side an old handwritten label: Madame Jean Baptiste Say, belongs to Mr. Edmond Raoul-Duval"; on the frame a label HARO / PEINTRES EXPERTS () 20 rue Bonaparte. On Jean-Baptiste Say, his life, his works and his intellectual environment, one may refer to Ernest Teilac's study, L'oeuvre Economique de Jean-Baptiste Say (Paris 1927). The author cites another portrait of the young economist by Pajou, painted in 1792, a volunteer in the "compagnie des arts", very similar to the one shown here "the collar wide open held back by a tie" in "a mixture of research and carelessness" which "reveals the friend of Isabey" (Chapter II). The author specifies that it is on the return from the army, on May 25, 1793, under the terror, that Jean-Baptiste Say became secretary of the minister Clavières under the name of "Atticus", and married Miss Gourdel-Deloches, daughter of a former lawyer at the Council.
