NODIER Charles (1780-1844) [AF 1833, 25e f].
L.A.S. "Charles Nodier", May 21, 1833, to François RAYNOUARD in Passy; 1 page small in-4, address (slight fading). Witty letter on his candidacy to the Académie française. [After several failures, Nodier was finally elected on October 24, 1833 to Jean-Louis Laya's chair]. "My dear master, I have an excellent reason for not going to see you: non licet omnibus adire in Passy, especially when one's legs are shriveled. However, I would like to ask you what you know about the next election. I am getting old. I may never walk without crutches. I'm too poor and too low in blood pressure to buy a chair. A chair would suit me well. If you don't want to give it to me, I'll go to bed, and we'll talk no more about it. Whatever happens, I am yours forever. Quod spiro et placeo, si placeo, tuum est ".
