LAMARTINE Alphonse de (1790-1869) [AF 1829, 7e f].
L.A.S. "Al. de Lamartine," April 21, 1847, to the collector CHAMBRY; 2 1/2 pages in-8 with his crowned cipher, address. On autographs. "Autographs are to history what guarantors are to the boundaries of fields. They assure them and indicate them. They are moreover the portrait of the hand of the great men; to these two titles they always interested me. It is the physiognomy of the thought ". He thanks Chambry for those that he puts at his disposal [to write his History of the Girondins], and he intends to make use the same evening "of one of the facts so tragic in its triviality [] Shakespeare would not have invented better than this tariff of the gravediggers of a monarchy". Attached is a L.A.S. to Vincent Campenon (3 p. in-8, address with name crossed out), [autumn 1829], asking him to support his candidacy for the Academy.
