FLÉCHIER Esprit (1632-1710) prélat, évêque de Nîmes, orateur religieux [AF 1672, 10e f].
L.A.S. " L'Abbé Flechier n. Ev. de Lavaur", Lavaur December 26 , to Madeleine de SCUDÉRY; 3 pages in-8.
Beautiful letter thanking Mademoiselle de Scudéry for sending her Conversations nouvelles sur divers sujets.
"The negligence of the messenger from Thoulose and the stay of more than two months that I made in Nismes, for the Assembly of the States of this province, have delayed, Mademoiselle, & the joy that I had to receive your last conversations, & the pleasure to read them, & celuy to thank you for them. I needed a reading as delightful as this one to tire me out from the fatigue of a journey, to cure me of the boredom of the bad companies of this country, & to make me enjoy the rest where the rigor of the season, and the docility of my new converts keep me in my Episcopal city. In truth, Mademoiselle, it seems to me that you are still growing in spirit. Everything is so reasonable, so poly, so moral, & so instructive in these two volumes, which you have done me the grace of sending me, that I sometimes feel like distributing them in my Diocese, to edify the good people, & to give a good model of Morality to those who prescribe it. The King's prayers are everywhere so finely inserted, that he would make an excellent Panegyric by collecting them...".
On the back of the letter, Mlle de Scudéry noted "l'Abbé Flechier".
