BENDA Julien (1867-1956).
original TAPUSCRIT with autograph corrections and additions, signed "Julien Benda", La Trahison des clercs, 1925; 159 leaves in-fol. (31 x 20,5 cm), in a folio volume bound in black jansenist morocco, spine ribbed, black moiré silk lining in a gilt framed border, same silk endpapers, case (Canape and Corriez). Precious typescript, partly autograph, of La Trahison des clercs, manifesto against the drift of ideologies. Julien Benda's masterpiece was published in 1927 in the "Cahiers verts" collection, by Grasset. This prophetic book was a great critical success, but it provoked attacks against the author from the right, in particular from the Action française. Benda received the unconditional support of Jean Paulhan and became a pillar of the NRF until 1940. The work was reissued in 1946 with a long preface in which Benda reaffirmed the validity of his work: "In the twenty years since the work I am reprinting today appeared, the thesis I maintained in it - that men whose function is to defend eternal and disinterested values, such as justice and reason, and whom I call clerics, have betrayed this function for the benefit of practical interests - appears to me, as it does to many of the people who ask me for this reprint, to have lost none of its truth, quite the contrary. " This typescript is the result of an impressive amount of work: it presents numerous additions and important reworkings, by collage of typed fragments, and sometimes in the form of handwritten spandrels arranged and pasted on the sheets, revealing the facts and authorities on which Benda based his reasoning. It has numerous erasures and corrections. If this typescript was used for printing, many footnotes intended by the author will not be integrated into the published version (references to Joseph Bédier, Saint-Evremond...); pencil notes indicate the precise references. The first edition of La Trahison des clercs (Paris, Grasset, "Les Cahiers verts", 1927), in-12, marbled paper bradel boards, cons. One of the copies on Alfa. A few faded leaves, a few scattered stains, small defects to the slipcase. For the first edition, first cover and first endpaper detached, spine unstained, small rubs to the spine.
