Alabaster plaque carved with gold highlights... - Lot 6 - Drouot Estimations
Alabaster plaque carved with gold highlights representing Esther and Ahasuerus. Esther kneels and clasps her hands before King Ahasuerus seated on his throne under a festooned canopy; he holds out his scepter to her in a gesture of forgiveness; behind her, her attendants stand with Mordecai and the vizier Aman. Cartouche bearing the monogram (H)VH. Mechelen, workshop of Hans Van Haechten, early 17th century. 15,7 x 12,1 cm. Cracks and wear. In a carved wooden frame. Label on the back with the inscription Esther in front of Assuérus - found at the bottom of a pond in St Louis Les Bitches (mosaics) - Frame made by one of the workers of St Louis 1880-1885 - Very naive frame. Only one other bas-relief presenting this iconography is known, it is preserved in the Royal Museums of Art and History of Brussels, but is not monogrammed. Book consulted: G.
