[GOUNOD Charles]. VIARDOT Pauline (1821-1910).
5 L.A.S. "Pauline Viardot" or "P. Viardot", 1866-1893, to Charles GOUNOD; 11 pages in-8. [Pauline Viardot ardently supported Gounod's debut, having him write for her his first opera, Sapho, which she imposed on the Opéra] Bade 2 and 27 November 1866, about Sapho. She asks to send "immediately the piano score of Sapho, with the libretto, the staging (if possible) and the German translation" because the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar has asked her to perform this opera in Weimar: "if Sapho were well launched on a good court theatre, such as the one in Weimar, it could have as much future as Faust"... - She takes offence at Gounod's question about her royalties: 'And I imagined that my proposal to launch your first, and perhaps after all your most beautiful work in Germany would be accepted by you with joy! If you do not want it any more than that, then let it go"... London, 4 July [1871]: she invites him 'to a little matinee I am giving at my house on Tuesday 11th [...] Why don't we see you any more? are you so busy? or is it that Tavistock House is so far from Devonshire Place that we forget our old friends there? She sends him and asks to listen to the singing of the Baron of Seldeneck "who, in spite of his title and rank as an officer in the Baden army, is one of the most genial natures of artist we have ever met" 3 L.A.S. are enclosed to Anna Gounod, thanking her for an invitation at the end of the year, announcing the engagement of her granddaughter Jeanne Chamerot, and a letter of condolences at the death of Gounod (October 1893): " my heart is with you "; a letter of condolences to Jean Gounod (October 24): " I was the oldest friend of the one we are mourning "... Plus a L.A.S. from Paul VIARDOT (19 January 1893) recommending Miss Madeleine de Nocé.
