[GOUNOD Charles]. FAURÉ Gabriel (1845-1924).
L.A.S. "Gabriel Fauré" to Charles GOUNOD, 1877; and 6 L.A.S. to Jeanne de LASSUS (Gounod's daughter); 1 page and a half in-8, and 9 pages in-8 or in-12. On his engagement to Marianne Viardot, and his position as Kapellmeister at the Madeleine. Paris 29 July [1877]. Fauré thanks his 'dear Master' 'for the great happiness' that has befallen him: 'you are the architect of this happiness to a great extent: it is that by giving me signs of encouragement and sympathy you have confirmed the opinion that Mr and Mrs Viardot were willing to have of me and of my future; it is that by facilitating my access to the functions that I occupy at the Madeleine, you have helped me to iron out material difficulties that prudent parents should have taken into consideration'... The letters to Mme de Lassus are answers or thanks for invitations to her or to his mother Mme Gounod; he regrets not having been able to " reach the perfection that I would have wished for, that I hear in my head and in my heart but that I cannot, alas, obtain! I have lived happily in this beautiful work and I have learned a lot from it"... Attached is a L.A.S., 22 March [1883], by Louise Brun, Emmanuel FRÉMIET and Gabriel FAURÉ, inviting Gounod to the dinner given by the sculptor Frémiet on the occasion of the marriage of his daughter to Gabriel Fauré, which will take place on 27 March. At the end of the letter, Fauré has copied three bars of Mireille: " A vos pieds, hélas, nous voilà " .... (4 pages in-12). Plus a photo attached.
