[GOUNOD Charles]. BLANCHE Émile (1820-1893).
3 L.A.S. "E. Blanche", to Charles GOUNOD, Passy 1870- 1872; 10 pages in-8, one address. Interesting letters from the alienist doctor to his patient. [Dr. Blanche treated and welcomed Gounod, who was in the grip of depression or delirium, on several occasions in his nursing home in Passy]. October 24, 1870 (by mounted balloon). He gives news of Paris, and philosophizes on the war and the hope of peace. Militarism will disappear from the world. The houses have not suffered in Montretout. He recommends his "little boy" to him. January 3, 1872. Dr Blanche thanks Gounod for having taken care of his son Jacques (the painter Jacques-Émile Blanche) during his stay in London and for having sent him his photograph; he worries about his health and hopes for his return to Paris where his family waits for him impatiently: " Your Jean sighs after the moment when he will hold you in his arms and will cover you with his kisses. So hurry up and get completely well"...June 29, 1872. He firmly denies a statement that was attributed to him concerning the state of health of Gounod: "I hope that you know me well enough to be certain that I am sincere"... Attached: - a L.A.S. from Dr Blanche to Georgina Weldon, Passy 16 June 1874, giving news: "Gounod is better, he is notably calmer, he looks better, he can start reading again; unfortunately the nights still leave something to be desired. He follows a treatment which will be very useful for his throat and his larynx"... - Gounod's translation into English of a certificate from Dr Blanche and his colleague Noël Guéneau de Mussy (4 Sept. 1874) attesting that Gounod's state of health requires complete rest, and that he is unable to travel. L.A.S from GOUNOD to Dr Blanche (11 November 1873) about a request for an autograph which flatters him : " I want to hope that I will be accommodated in a kind of antechamber where I can wait for my letter of admission in the hall of the elected ". - 2 L.A.S. from Jacques-Émile BLANCHE : (22 October [1902]) to Anna Gounod, condolences after the death of Pierre de Lassus (husband of Jeanne Gounod), (28 December 1933), to Jean Gounod (?) recommending the young Théodore Braïnine, brother of the pianist Balbina Braïnina. - Plus a visiting card a.s. from Dr Jules PÉAN congratulating Gounod for his " legitimate distinction " and his photograph (collection Nos contemporains chez eux de Dornac).
