[GOUNOD Charles]. BERLIOZ Hector (1824-1867).
2 L.A.S. "H. Berlioz" to Charles GOUNOD, 1851-1866; 3 and 1 pages in-12 (the 2nd on a diary sheet). Belles lettres amicales et musicales. 19 November 1851. [About Gounod's incidental music for François Ponsard's tragedy Ulysse at the Comédie-Française (see Condé p. 482-488)] : " I have just read very carefully your chorus of Ulysse. The work as a whole seems to me to be very remarkable and the musical interest grows with the drama. The double heart of the Festin is admirable and will produce an exciting effect if it is properly performed. The Comédie-Française should not and cannot skimp on your means of execution. The music alone, in my opinion, will attract the crowd during a large number of performances. It is therefore in the most direct and commercial interest of the director of this theatre to give the composer a large share of the expenses for the staging of Ulysses; and I believe that he will do so. But do not weaken. You must do what is necessary, or nothing. Be careful of the singers you entrust with your solos; a ridiculous solo spoils a whole piece. On the page marked with a horn, there is a punctuation error in the music at the beginning of a line that I urge you to correct. Honest people should not chant like that; let's leave that to the paccotilleurs." .... [29 April 1866]. "I have just heard your Good Friday piece at an orpheonist's practice; it is superb, admirable, heart-rending! I shake your hand"... Berlioz, Correspondance générale, no. 1436 (vol. IV) and no. 3130 bis (vol. VIII).
