[GOUNOD Charles]. BEAUCOURT Gaston du Fresne, marquis de (1833-1902).
38 L.A. or L.A.S. by Gaston de Beaucourt and especially his wife Édith, or by both of them together (and one by their son Henry), Paris, Saint-Léger and Morainville 1866-1871 and 1874; about 110 pages in-8 or in-12. Nice friendly and affectionate correspondence. The historian Gaston de Beaucourt was twelve years old when he met Gounod, of whom he will remain one of the most faithful friends. It is him who will go to tear off Gounod from the claws of Georgina Weldon in 1874; he will often welcome Gounod in his castle of Morainville (Calvados). His wife Edith, born Cardon de Montigny (1855-1906), married in 1854, will be one of the privileged confidants of Gounod. Affectionate letters never ceasing to thank Gounod for the happiness he gives to the family. Edith gives news of the children, notably of the eldest Edmond, an officer, who participates in the fights against the Commune, and the last one, the little Charles, born in 1868, godson of Gounod; she inquires about the health of Gounod, physical and moral: " My soul remained with yours, in the Garden of Olives united to your anguish, to your darkness, to your tortures " (13 January 1871). She talks about the success of Gallia and urges Charles to come back and stay in Trouville and Morainville. 30 March 1874 : she complains about Gounod's silence : " I had heard all sorts of things about Mireille, about Georges Dandin, and I was very keen to know the truth from you. What a pity that the Opéra comique has lost such a beautiful hope through his fault"; she is worried about the silence around him and urges him to rejoin his real family. Gaston evokes their respective works: "I am sinking deeper and deeper into my Charles VII [...] Keep us informed of Polyeucte" ... - We had the pleasure of hearing Romeo voted for the 4th time on Saturday [...] Mrs Carvalho was admirably in voice"... Etc. 4 L.A.S. from Edith de Beaucourt (March-June 1874) to Georgina Weldon, about Gounod's health which worries her; she urges him to call on Doctor Blanche... Plus a small envelope annotated by Gounod to Morainville (23 Sept. 1883). And the typed copy of notes from the Marquise de Beaucourt on Gounod's stays at Morainville.
