GOUNOD Charles.
MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autographed "Charles Gounod", La Redemption, Trilogie sacrée (1882); 566 pages in-fol. (35,5 x 27 cm), contemporary binding in midnight blue half-chagrin (binding a little worn). Important complete manuscript of the orchestral score of this great oratorio. Composed from 1869 to 1881, La Rédemption [CG 32; Condé p. 508-514], with lyrics by Gounod himself, for 4 soloists, mixed choir and large orchestra, was premiered at the Birmingham Festival on 30 August 1882, with the help of 400 choristers and an orchestra of 140 musicians, under the direction of Gounod, with great success. In the preface to the edition of the score, Gounod presented his work as follows: "This work is the lyrical exposition of the three great facts on which the existence of the Christian Society rests, and which are: 1. The Passion and Death of the Saviour, 2. His glorious life on earth, from His Resurrection to His Ascension, 3. The diffusion of Christianity in the world by the Apostolic mission. These three parts of the present Trilogy are preceded by a Prologue on the Creation, the Fall of our first parents and the promise of a Liberator. The manuscript is carefully noted in black ink on 26-stave paper; it presents numerous corrections by scratching; each number is preceded by a title page (not paginated); Gounod paginated his score in blue pencil, each part having its own pagination; leaves were added (as shown sometimes by a double pagination, corrected) It was used as a conductor and bears autograph annotations in blue pencil.
