MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph "Ch. Gounod", Messe du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus, 1875-1876; one folio volume (35.5 x 27.5 cm) of 155 pages plus title, bound in marbled paper boards with autograph title label on upper board, black cloth spine (partly detached). Orchestral score of Gounod's second Messe solennelle. This Messe du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus [CG 58; Condé p. 563-567], composed twenty years after the famous Messe en l'honneur de Sainte Cécile, for 4-part mixed choir, 4 soloists and orchestra, in C major, was premiered on 22 November 1876 at Saint-Eustache, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Cécile, and published in 1876 by Henry Lemoine. The manuscript, in black ink on Lard-Esnault paper with 26 staves, was used as a conductor and presents shades and annotations in red or blue pencil, as well as traces of corrections by scratching, and a collet. The title page bears the dates: "Commenced 15 November 1875; completed 31 January 1876, at midnight". It is paginated in red pencil from 1 to 144, then in ink for No. 7 (from 145 to 155. It includes the following numbers: No. 1. Kyrie , in C major in 4/4, Moderato (title and p. 1 to 19). NO. 2. Gloria, in C major in 3/4, beginning Allegretto (title and p. 20-66). NO. 3. Credo, in G major in 4/4, Andante molto maëstoso (title and p. 67-105, with a two-bar collette on p. 96). N° 4 [ and 5]. Sanctus, in E flat major in 4/4, Andante molto maestoso, then Benedictus, in A flat major in 4/4, Andante (title and p. 106-129). NO. 6. Agnus Dei, in C major at 44, Andantino (title and p. 130-144). NO. 7. The Communion (Instrumental Epilogue), the 1st page entitled "March of the Communion", with the epigraph: "Venite ad me" (Matth. XI, 28), in C major in 4/4, Andante (title and p. 145- 155), with the measure count (82) written at the end.
