2 autographed MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS signed "Ch. Gounod," Messe brève pour les Morts, and Messe instrumentale, 1872-1874; 3 titles and 16 folio pages (35 x 27 cm, some flaws); title and 25 folio pages (36.5 x 26.5 cm). complete Requiem Mass, and unfinished instrumental Mass. Messe brève pour les Morts [CG 78, Condé p. 618-621], first performed in part on June 19, 1872 at the 3rd Choral Concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Manuscript for a cappella choir, used for the engraving of the 1873 Goddard edition (cut and pasted on gummed paper), notated in brown ink on 26-line paper; the Offertory has been added and the whole work renumbered. It bears at the head this quotation: "Et Ipse redimet Israel ex omnibus iniquitatibus ejus." (Psalm 130) (De Profundis)"; and at the end: "In te, Domine, speravi; non confundar in æternum." (Te Deum)", with the signature and date "30 January 1872". - N° 1. Introït and Kyrie (double choir) : " Requiem æternam "..., Andante (quasi adagio) in F major. - N° 2. Offertory : " Domine, Jesu Christe, Rex gloriæ "..., with organ (English text added in another hand in pencil : " Lord our Savour "...), Andante in F minor. - No 3. Sanctus, Moderato maëstoso in C. - N° 4. Pie Jesu (for 6 voices, soli), Adagio in F major. - N° 5. Agnus Dei: primus et secundus in F minor, tertius in F major. Messe instrumentale [CG 542; Condé p. 888-889], left unfinished, of which only the Kyrie is presented here (the draft of the Gloria has disappeared): "Good combination; very new, which has no precedent; excellent for concerts or festivals: Orchestra only; no trouble with Choirs or Soloists: Wonderful ? in addition, voices can be introduced ad libitum if necessary: it remains to be seen. In any case, the fundamental idea is symphonic ", wrote Gounod to Georgina Weldon. The title page reads 'begun at St Leonard's on Sea, Tuesday 10 March 1874', and the last page reads 'St Leonard's on Sea (Thursday 12 March)'. The manuscript is written in black ink on 24-line bi-fold paper; each sheet is crossed out with Georgina's large signature Weldon in black grease pencil. The orchestra includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns in F and D, trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, and strings. This Kyrie, in D minor in 4/4, followed by a Fugue, is 105 bars long. Enclosed are: - nos. 4 and 5 of the Missa brevis S.S. Angeli Custodes [CG 73]: O Salutaris and Agnus Dei, the latter signed at the end and dated "Londres 25 9bre /72". (4 and 6 p. oblong in-4), for 4 mixed voices and organ; - the beginning of an unfinished Messe dans le style du Plain Chant [CG 75], for soli, choir and organ, of which only this manuscript survives giving the Kyrie and the Christe (title and 2 p. oblong in-4); - the Kyrie fugué of a project for a 4-voice Mass [CG 76] (title and 2 p. oblong in-4).
