4 autographed MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS signed "Ch. Gounod", [1872]; 44 oblong pages in-4 (18 x 27 cm). Choruses published in the two sets of Six New Part-Songs published by Goddard & Co. in 1872. [Conde pp. 863-868]. FIRST SERIES. Nos. 1, 2 and 6, dedicated to the Royal Albert Hall Choral Society. Each of the three manuscripts, in brown ink on 12-line oblong leaves (half LardEsnault leaves in-fol. cut), is preceded by a title page signed "Ch. Gounod", bearing at the top the general title and the dedication: "Six Part-Songs. (Dedicated to the R. Albert Hall Choral Society) of 1872"; they were used for the engraving of the edition. - 1 Omnipotent Lord, a Sacred Part-Song [CG 275], to words by James Mason, for 4 mixed voices (the tenor and bass desks divided, i.e. six voices) and organ. Title and 11 pages. In F major at 3/2. The edition is enclosed. - 2 Little Celandine, a Part-Song, on a poem by William Wordsworth: "Pansies, lilies"... [CG 402a], for 4/6 voices and piano. Title and 15 pages. Allegretto, in D major in 2/4 time; this is an adaptation for choir of a duet (see Condé p. 688). - 6 Take me, Mother Earth, a PartSong [CG 279], on a poem by Anna Brownell Jameson, for 4/6 voices and piano. Title and 9 pages. In D minor, at 3/4, "arguably the masterpiece of this collection. Pathetic, the expression, all in restraint, is never forced. It is the aspiration to a sleep without awakening at the end of an existence of sorrows and joys " (G Condé). SECOND SERIES. [N° 6]. The Wolf and the Lamb (fable by La Fontaine). Chorus for men's voices: "A lamb was quenching its thirst"... [CG 284], signed on the title page and dated "Spa 21 août /72". Title and 7 oblong pages in-4 (partly cut out for the engraving and glued back with gummed paper). The title page bears the dedication: "To the Melomanes of Ghent". The choir is written for 4 male voices. It was composed on the French text; Gounod then added for the edition the English translation under the part of the 2nd bass; he also added, in pencil, a piano accompaniment, in the interval between the two systems of staves, and on collages added at the bottom of the leaves. Attached is the autograph manuscript of Un tems était, Chanson de Baïf sous Henri III, arranged for 4 mixed voices (title and 1 p. in-fol.); plus 4 title pages of songs.
