GOUNOD Charles.
3 autographed MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS signed "Charles Gounod", To God, ye choir above, Sacred Song, and Intreat me not to leave thee, 1872; 7 folio pages on 2 bifeleaves (cloth spine), and 24 folio pages on 6 bifeleaves bound with string (35.5 x 27.5 cm, including titles); and title and 5 folio pages on 2 bifeleaves bound with string (35 x 27 cm). Two sacred songs composed for and dedicated to Georgina Weldon, the first in both versions. To God, ye choir above, Sacred Song. This sacred song [CG 462] was composed 'expressly for the Festival Concert at the Crystal Palace' given on 27 July 1872, as the title pages indicate, both bearing the dedication: 'Dedicated to and sung by Mrs Weldon'. The words are by the vicar Philipp Skelton (1784), and are a paraphrase of the Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi. Gérard Condé emphasizes "the fervent tone, in tune with that of the poem, and, above all, the persistence throughout of the regular eighth-note chords in the 12/8 time signature" (Condé p. 738-739). The manuscript for voice and piano, in black ink on 24-line Lard-Esnault paper, shows numerous erasures and corrections as well as traces of scratching; it was used for the engraving of the 1872 Goddard edition; the organ part, planned for the armature, was not written. Moderato maëstoso, at 12/8, in E flat major; the title page bears this note by Gounod in blue pencil: " Transpose in C for publication ". The manuscript of the orchestration bears, on the title page, the indication: " Edition for Solo voice, Piano & winds Instruments ", as well as the ink stamp Georgina Weldon for the Orphanage. The instrumentation includes flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns in E-flat and C, trumpets, 3 trombones, bass tuba, timpani, harps and piano. In brown ink on 24-line bi-fold, it presents a few erasures and corrections; it was used as a conductor, as evidenced by a few annotations in pencil. "Intreat me not to leave thee" (Song of Ruth) [CG 392], signed on the title page " Ch. Gounod" and dated "25 Xbre /72 Christmas day", with the dedication at the top: "Dedicated to and sung by Mrs Weldon". The manuscript is in black ink on water green paper with 14 lines; it was used for the engraving of the edition at Goddard. For voice and piano, it begins with a brief Andante recital in E minor ("And Ruth said"), followed by a "quasi-chorale in E major where the piano doubles the voice": "Intreat me not"... (Condé, pp. 681-682). Attached is a non-autograph manuscript of a string accompaniment for To God, ye choir above, bearing the ink stamp Georgina Weldon for the Orphanage (3 p. oblong in-fol.); plus a musical manuscript by Georgina WELDON of three songs with English lyrics: "With one consent"..., "I lov'd a lass", and "Oh? she'ld kiss me too"... (2 p. in-4).
