9 autograph MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS signed "Ch. Gounod", 1871-1872; 30 folio pages, plus titles. Set of seven English melodies for Georgina Weldon, some in two versions. Good night ? [CG 386; Condé pp. 676-677]: "Good night? ah, no?"..., to a poem by Percy B. Shelley, "a gallant indictment, in three stanzas, of the hour that separates those it might unite" (G. Condé). Dated "London April/71". Moderato in 3/4 in F. Title and 2 pages. Queen of Love, a Song [CG 433; Condé p. 714-715] : "Close as the stars along the sky"..., on a poem from Francis Turner Palgrave's Lyrical Poems, where the flowers of the meadow want to hold the poet's attention, and he chooses the smallest one to make it his Queen of Love Dated "London 24 May 1871. Allegro (quasi moderato) in 6/8 in E major. Title with dedication: "Dedicated to and sung by Mrs Weldon", and 3 pages. - Plus the "Part-Song" version for 4 mixed voices in D major, Allegretto at 6/8, lyrics partly in Georgina Weldon's hand. Title and 2 pages. The Sea hath its pearls [CG 458; Condé p. 734], to a poem by Henry W. Longfellow (who translated a poem by Heinrich Heine). Dated 'London May/71', and dedicated 'to Mrs Weldon'. Allegretto appassionato in D flat major at 3/4. Title and 3 pages. - Version with piano, violin and harmonium accompaniment; the orchestral introduction has 19 bars (instead of 4 in the vocal-piano version). Title (on which the dedication has been scratched out) and 6 pages (one cut out for engraving and reattached). The Better Land [CG 448; Condé p. 726-727]: 'I hear thee speak of the better land'..., to a poem by Felicia Hemans, featuring a child asking his mother where the wonderful land she tells him about is. Dated "London, March 9/72. Allegretto in E flat major in 4/4. Title and 3 pages, used for engraving, with crossed-out bars. Peacefully slumber (Lullaby) [CG 424; Condé p. 708], on a poem by Henry Dulcken, sad lullaby. Signed at the end and dated "London, 7.XII./72". Andantino in E flat major in 2/4. 2 oblong pages, used for engraving. Evening Song [CG 382; Condé p. 673-674] : " The shadows of the evening hours "..., on a poem by Adelaide Anne Procter, " with accompaniment of Viola obligato ". Dedication on the title page : " Dedicated to my friend A. Viguier ans sung by Mrs Weldon ". Andantino in E flat major in 6/8. Title and 3 pages; plus the vocal part alone (1 p.). Oh happy home ? [CG 416; Condé p. 700-701] : " I found a flower pining on the heights "..., on a poem by Edward Maitland; Gounod considered it " one of the most beautiful I will ever do ". Dedication on the title page: "Dedicated to my friend Harry Weldon and sung by Mrs Weldon". Andantino (quasi moderato) in E minor at 3/4. Title and 6 pages, used for the engraving of the edition (one sheet cut and pasted back). Attached is a pencil sketch of Grandfather's Song [CG 481] ironed in ink by G. Weldon, giving the vocal line alone (title and 5 pages), with a long note by G. Weldon on the title page: "My dear Old Man was so funny. He so loved to hear me sing roulades. It was not my taste [...] I used to say to him: [...] Verdi and Rossini etc. made more beautiful bravura arias than you would. It is their genre, let them have their genre, keep yours. But my Gounod always wanted to ape everyone. [...] So he composed for me this sort of Polka, which I never liked, but to which, later, I added Victor Hugo's words from L'Art d'être grand-père "; plus the manuscript of the melody by G. Weldon. - 2 English children's songs notated by Gounod: Here we go round and Jack and Jill (1 p. in-4). - A copy of the melody Enthousiasme [CG 379] on a poem by V. Hugo (3 p. in-fol.).
