Autographed MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS signed "Ch. Gounod", 1871-1873; 18 pages large in-8 (27 x 18 cm) in a partly torn and unbound album (some flaws), bound in brown chagrin, framed in gilt fillet on boards, inscription in gilt letters on upper board. Georgina Weldon. 1866. Melodies for Georgina Weldon's album. Refugee in London in 1870, Gounod was advised and welcomed by the Weldon couple. He soon fell under the charm and the hold of the pretty Georgina WELDON (1837-1914), excellent musician gifted with a very beautiful voice, who became his Muse [Condé, p. 268-271]. At the end of the album, Georgina Weldon drew up an Index, listing 70 musical pieces, of which only Gounod's compositions remain. - Perché piangi? signed and dated at the end "30 August/71", the song and lyrics in Georgina Weldon's hand, the piano accompaniment in Gounod's hand [CG 425]. - La Fauvette (Romance), signed and dated at the end "28 March 1872" [CG383], with the Italian translation written in red ink below the French words. - Sweet baby [GC 445], copy by Georgina Weldon, signed and dated at the end by Gounod: "31 mars /72. Easter day. London. Tavistock House. - Maid of Athens [CG 406], with the Italian translation written in red ink under the French words. - Biondina, Sotto un cappello rosa [GC 341], copy by Georgina Weldon. - The Better Land [CG 448], lyrics written by Georgina Weldon (and Italian translation in red); following this, Gounod wrote the text of the three verses of the French version: "Tu me parles toujours d'un pays radieux"... - "Nous fuyons la Patrie?" (Jeanne d'Arc) [GC 29], dedicated and dated at the end: "to my dear little Mimi, for her day of birth. 24 May 1873. Tavistock House. London. His old Ch.
