GOUNOD Charles.
2 autographed MUSICAL MANUSCRIPTS, Walses for piano and Ivy, [ca. 1838-1872]; notebook of 4 leaves (30.5 x 23.5 cm), and 2 folio pages plus title (35 x 27 cm). Two compositions for piano. The three Walses for piano [CG 608; Condé p. 935], early compositions (ca. 1838-1839), notated in brown ink in a 16-line paper notebook, have remained unpublished. The title page is signed " Ch. Gounod ". Each waltz is notated on two pages, and includes a Trio. The First Walse, in C "is very simple, in the style of the laendler" (G. Condé); the Second Walse, in B flat major, is marked Dolce e ben legato; the Third Walse, in D flat major, Con grazia. Ivy, Song without word for the Piano-forte [CG 581; Condé pp. 925- 926], published in 1872 in London by Goddard, and the following year in France by Lemoine under the title Le Lierre, is the sixth romance without words by Gounod; it is dedicated on the title page to the famous English pianist Arabella Goddard (1836-1922): " Dedicated to Madame Arabella Goddard Charles Gounod ". The manuscript, in brown ink on Lard-Esnault paper with 26 lines, was used for the engraving of the edition. In B flat major in 4/4, marked Allegro agitato, the piece, "whose fluid melody turns and returns on itself", evokes the ivy that surrounds itself on trees and ruins. Attached is the manuscript of an early melody, Le Poëte mourant [CG 502; Condé p. 757], on the famous "Stances" of the poet Gilbert: "Au banquet de la vie infortuné convive"... The title page is in Gounod's hand, but the manuscript was copied by his mother, Victoire Gounod (notebook 30 x 22,5 cm, title and 4 p.).
