GOUNOD Charles.
MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph "Charles François Gounod", La Vendetta, lyrical scene, 1838; 93 pages oblong in-4 (25.3 x 33.3 cm), hardback (spine partly missing and repaired with tape). La Vendetta, cantata composed for the Prix de Rome in 1838 La Vendetta, "lyrical scene for soprano and tenor" with orchestra [CG 45], dated "Year 1838" on the title page, with the indication "Composed for the Concours de l'Institut". (Condé, pp. 524-525). This is Gounod's second failure for the Prix de Rome, ahead of Georges Bousquet. This second Rome cantata, on a poem by Amédée de Pastoret, is, according to Gérard Condé, "the most personal and the most successful" of the three. It features a Corsican mother, Marcella, and her son Lucien, whom she charges with avenging the death of his father. Orchestral score, notated in brown ink on 46 oblong sheets of paper with 20 lines, plus the title page; at the end, Gounod has noted in pencil the number of bars (524). There are a few erasures and corrections, notably by scratching, and some annotations in orange pencil. The orchestra includes: flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns, trumpets, bassoons, timpani, violins I and II, violas, cellos, double basses. Discography: Gounod et le Prix de Rome, Brussels Philharmonic, dir. Hervé Niquet (Palazzetto Bru Zane, Singulares, 2017).
