Francis poulenc (1899-1963).
MUSICAL MANUSCRIPT autograph signed "Francis Poulenc", Sérénade for cello and piano (1948). 3 pages in-fol. (35 x 27 cm). Transcription for cello and piano of one of the Chansons gaillardes. It was in October 1948 that Francis Poulenc made this transcription for cello and piano of the eighth and last of his Chansons gaillardes [FP 42] of 1926, the Sérénade ("Avec une si belle main"...). This arrangement was made from a transcription of the vocal line by the cellist Maurice GENDRON (1920- 1990). This version was published in December 1950 by Heugel, and became very popular among cellists. The manuscript, in blue ink on 16-line paper, is dated at the end "Paris Octobre 48". It bears at the top the dedication: " to Maurice Gendron ", the title: " Sérénade pour violoncelle et piano d'après la 8ème des Chansons Gaillardes ", and the mention: " arrangement by Maurice Gendron and the author ". The piece, in 6/8 time, is marked: Tempo de Sicilienne, with the indication under the piano part: " Dans un doux halo de pédale tout en la changeant très souvent ". Attached is the autograph manuscript by Maurice GENDRON of the cello part (1 page in-4); and the corrected proof for the edition (which Maurice Gendron corrected to be the author of the transcription, but this correction was rejected). Discography: Pierre Fournier, Francis Poulenc, 1953 (Twilight Music 2006); Jean-Guihen Queyras, Alexandre Tharaud (Harmonia Mundi 2008).
