MARTINU Bohuslav (1890-1959).
MUSICAL MANUSCRIT signed "B. Martinu", Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1, (1929); 1 title sheet and 37 pages folio, plus 1 title sheet and 16 pages folio. Martinu's first sonata for violin and piano. This Sonata n°1 for violin and piano [H. 182], written in Paris in 1929, was premiered in Paris in November 1930 at the École Normale de Musique by H. de Champigny on violin and P. Maire on piano, and published the same year by Alphonse Leduc. The form of this sonata is very free, almost rhapsodic, and shows, in the rhythm as in the harmony, a strong influence of jazz music. The violin part is extremely virtuosic, with cadenzas for the violin alone in the first and last movements that sound like improvisations. The slow movement is in the style of the blues, with pizzicato passages. The manuscript is in black ink on 4-system 3-stave paper; the title page is dated: 'Paris, October 1929'; it is dated at the end: 'Paris 4/1 1929'; it comprises three movements: I. [Cadenza] then Allegro (13 p.); II. Andante (12 p.) ; III. Allegretto (12 p.). Plus the manuscript of the violin part (16 p.), with pencil sketches on the verso of the title. Discography: Bohuslav Matousek and Petr Adamec (Supraphon 1998).
