DUTILLEUX Henri (1916-2013).
MUSICAL MANUSCRIT autograph "Henri Dutilleux", Sonatine for flute and piano, (1943); title and 18 pages in-fol. (34.5 x 27 cm; publisher's ink stamps). Manuscript of this beautiful Sonatina for flute and piano, popular with flautists. Written at the request of Claude Delvincourt, director of the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris, who wanted both to encourage young composers to "delve into the technique of instruments", and to encourage students to work on new scores and to overcome technical difficulties, this Sonatine for flute was put out to competition for the Conservatoire in 1943; it is dedicated to the flutist Gaston Crunelle (1898-1990), professor at the Conservatoire, who gave the first public performance of the work on January 17, 1944, with the composer at the piano. It was published in 1943 by Alphonse Leduc. The manuscript is in black ink on 20-line paper. In D minor, the Sonatine is divided into three parts: Allegretto (pp. 1-7), Andante (pp. 7-9), Animé (pp. 9-18). "The soft, linked language of the Allegretto gradually gives way to almost shrill, insistent sounds. [...] A cadential passage, quite technical, which the flutist must play "with fantasy", precedes the Andante. Its dotted motif, quite vigorous, prefigures the theme of this Andante, which repeats the same melodic pattern, with minimal variations, but on a very stretched rhythm. The last section, indicated Animé, is based on a perpetual motion from which emerges the main motif played on the flute. The frantic race is interrupted for a cadenza, only to resume again" (Marie Delcambre-Monpoël and Maxime Joos). This score has become an essential part of the flautists' repertoire. The manuscript is kept in a folder bearing the signed printing order, with the indication of the duration: "8 minutes", and the date of the order for the edition (April 22, 1943). Discography: Vincent Lucas (flute) and Pascal Godart (piano), in Dutilleux, Pages de jeunesse, by the Soloists of the Orchestre de Paris (Indesens 2007).
