BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN (1770-1827).
autograph musical manuscript of the end of the lied Neue Liebe, Neues Leben, [WoO 127, Vienna 1798-1799]; one oblong page (22,3 cm x 31,5 cm); in brick red morocco case, spandrels and gilt brass title-piece on upper board, inside flap in unbleached cloth. Continuation of the previous manuscript, giving the end of the first sketch of the lied Neue Liebe, neues Leben, WoO 127. In 12 lines, Beethoven has finished the lied, with the musical setting of verses 3 to 8 of the 3rd stanza: "'Mädchen mich so wider Willen fest' " ..... up to the last verse, repeated several times: "'laß mich los' ". This manuscript, like the previous one, of which it is a continuation, is written in brown ink on 12 of the staves of this 16-line sheet. This sheet was originally the second of a two-sheet, formerly in the collection of Baroness Anna von Gleichenstein, the sister of Therese Malfatti (Beethoven's friend and probable dedicatee of the Letter to Elise), and which was later divided. The first folio, in the archives of the publisher Schott in Mainz, was sold at Sotheby's in London (6 December 2002, no. 14). [see above]. The present folio was sold in Cologne by Venator & Hanstein, 25 March 2011 (no. 861). The opportunity has now arisen to reunite these two sheets, and to reconstitute the complete sketch of this work by Beethoven. Discography: Peter Maus, Hans Hilsdorf (Deutsche Gramophon, 87).
