Fernand LÉGER (1881-1955)
The big yellow flame, 1953. Unique piece because of its colours. Bas-relief, cast in white clay, opaque white slip and polychrome enamels, executed posthumously by the Brice workshops. Signed and dated lower left. Printed "F.LEGER 51 BIOT (AM)" and stamped "ATELIERS BRICE CERAMISTES DE F.LEGER BIOT AM" on the reverse. 70 x 47,5 x 9 cm. Small defects of cooking. Provenance : Roland Brice estate. Then by descent to the present owner. Bibliography: Yvonne Brunhammer, Fernand Léger, L'oeuvre monumentale, 5 Continents Editions, Paris, 2005 p. 121. This bas-relief is the largest of Fernand Léger's ceramics in a single element. The motif is taken from a project for a mural decoration for the hall of the UN General Assembly in New York. We thank Mr Bruno Brice, grandson of Roland Brice and son of Claude Brice, for confirming the authenticity of this work. A certificate of authenticity of Mr Brice will be delivered to the future buyer.
