Trophim Mikhalovich DOROKHOV
Very large icon of the Exaltation of the Cross. Tempera and gold on wood. Russia, Vereia (Moscow oblast), circa 1820. By Trofim Mikhailovich DOROKHOV (painter listed and active in the late 18th - early 19th century). Signed lower right in Russian: "This Holy Icon was painted in the city of Vereia by the icon painter Trofim Mikhailovich Dorokhov in the year 1820". H. 112 x W. 53 cm. History According to tradition, Emperor Constantine (306-337) sent his mother Helena to Jerusalem to venerate the Holy Places and to find the location of the Holy Sepulchre and the Cross. Thanks to the information transmitted by oral tradition, Saint Helen found the three crosses on which Christ and the two thieves had been hung, as well as the three nails that had been used to bind the body of Christ. The healing of a dying woman at the approach of the Holy Cross allowed Macarius, Patriarch of Jerusalem, to recognize it. The empress, visible alone and crowned on the left, and her entire court venerated and piously embraced the Holy Cross. In order that the faithful, visible in the lower part including children, could also venerate the Holy Cross, the patriarch climbed onto the ambo, took the Cross with both hands and raised it in full view, while the crowd cried out Lord, have mercy. On our icon, next to the Glorious Cross are Patriarch Macarius on the right and Pope Sylvester on the left, dressed in episcopal vestments and holding the Holy Cross in both hands, flanked by two deacons. The first holds a trikiron (), a candlestick with three intersecting candles, symbolizing the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The second holds a dhikirion (), a candlestick with two intersecting candles, symbolizing the dual nature, divine and human, in the one person of Christ. The Church celebrates the exaltation of the Cross every year on September 14 not only in commemoration of its invention, but also to show that this instrument of shame has become a pride and joy, as St. Paul testifies: "Let the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ be to me the only thing that I am proud of. Through it the world is crucified to me, and I to the world" (Galatians 6:14).
