AUBUSSON, XVIIème siècle
The knights Charles and Ubald, and their retinue, show Renaud his effeminate state due to the bewitchment of the magician Armide. Tapestry in polychrome wool. Without border. Modern lining. 200 x 170 cm. Wear, restorations, faded colours. The love story of Renaud and Armide is told between songs XIV and XX of the epic poem, religious and courtly novel "Jerusalem Delivered" by the poet Torquato TASSO, known as Le Tasse, relating the fighting between Christians and pagans during the first Crusade (1096-1099). This passage is told in the XVIth song of the poem.
