FRANCE, Epoque Empire, premier quart du XIXème siècle
Bronze and brass clock partially gilded symbolizing Love. Summed up with a draped woman, sitting on the bollard containing the movement, one foot on a stool, a dove messenger on the thigh and holding a tablet engraved with the inscription "This messenger of love makes happy days flow". White enamelled dial, signed REPOND in Paris, with black painted indexes, Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. Rectangular base with rounded ends, with applied decorations of sheep facing each other and foliage, resting on six feet. 52 x 42 x 18 cm. Wear and oxidation to the gilding, some missing parts and accidents, soldering to the reverse of the base, shocks to the brass cylinder containing the movement; threaded axis of the dove, reported. Pierre Joseph REPOND or REPOUX (1752), Parisian clockmaker, received Master in 1778, seems active until 1806. His widow took over the management of the workshop from 1810 to 1815. Our model is less well known than the one reproduced in the above works, with an oval medallion decorated with a man's profile, instead of the tablet engraved with the motto, as here.
