Ecole de Tiziano Vecellio TITIEN, dit Tiziano (1488/1490-Venise 1576)
San Sebastian. At his feet, in the shade, his armour and quiver. Oil on canvas. 90,4 x 64 cm. Wooden frame and gilded stucco. Restoration. Reprint of St. Sebastian accompanied by a cherub from the Altarpiece of San Nicolo dei Frari (c. 1520-1525) by Titian, or the Madonna and Child in Glory with Six Saints, now in the Vatican Picture Gallery (Cf. Filippo Pedroco, Titian, no. 64, pp. 138-139). & 139-Milano 2000). The fact that the figure of St. Sebastian is accompanied here by his armour and quiver, which were missing from the original work, and that the cherub with the floral crown has been lowered to his height, has the effect of transforming this old revival into an autonomous work. The historian David Rostand has published a reproduction of a signed St. Sebastian, which is kept in a private collection (Titian's Saint Sebastian; Artibus and Historiae 30 (1994), pp. 23-39). Another version of the single St. Sebastian (Oil; 185.5 x 72 cm), without the crown cherub, was once part of the Contini Bonacossi Collection in Florence (Christie's London, July 7, 1972, no. 84).
