COCTEAU Jean (1889-1963)
Reunion of 52 autograph letters signed Milly-la-Forêt, Saint-Jean-Cap- Ferrat, January 20, 1957-October 2, 1963, set of 63 pages in-4 and 16 in-8 in ink (Small stains and wet spots, some tears, restoration, the letter to the mayor of Saint-Jean-Cap- Ferrat is restored). Important correspondence, including original plans, drawings and sketches, from Jean Cocteau to Jean Triquenot, an architect and decorator from Cannes with whom Cocteau associated for his architectural projects. These letters deal mainly with the design and construction of three chapels that Cocteau decorated: Notre-Dame-de-France in London, the Chapel of Saint-Pierre in Villefranche-sur-Mer and the Leper Chapel in Saint-Blaise-des-Simples , Milly-la-Forêt, between 1957 and 1963. These projects were not without their difficulties, notably for Cocteau's health, but also in his relationship with patrons and workers, which led him to write: "Never has a Renaissance artist bent his neck and I will not bend, neither for the work nor for those who assist me". The last letter in this set dates from a week before the artist's death. Enclosed are: 3 autograph envelopes, the typed transcription of all the letters and an autograph letter signed by Cocteau [to the mayor of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat ?], [S.l.], July 6, 1961, 1 page in-8 ? in ink.
