CHINE, Canton (Guangzhou), dynastie Qing (1644-1911), - Lot 93
CHINE, Canton (Guangzhou), dynastie Qing (1644-1911), Couple of dignitaries. Two polychrome papier-mâché statuettes with movable heads, with a pendulum made of a metal needle and a lead. Rectangular terraces. Height: 25.5 and 27 cm. One hand missing. Wear and tear, some cracks and chips, corner of a restored terrace. The English call these statuettes "nodding-head" because of their movable head. Many sculptures of different sizes, some over 120 cm. were made for export to Europe from the end of the 18th century. The most precious specimens were made of shaped clay and dressed with fabrics.
