COCTEAU Jean
Autograph poem, The Death of the Young Men of the Divine Hellade,[circa 1912]; title and 9 oblong pages small in-4 written on the front. Beautiful manuscript of a long unpublished poem of youth. Probably contemporary with La Danse de Sophocle, this poem, written in black ink, with erasures and corrections, is preceded by a title page, with two epigraphs (Athénée and Alphonse Daudet). It has 23 Alexandrian verses, numbered in Roman numerals, ranging from quatrain to huitain. "After an incisive winter, it was April's turn , a warm April through the whole window. And since I had just been sick for a long time and had felt the anguish of death, I had read four times to become stronger: "The death of the young men of the divine Hellade" A little blue book by an Oxford teacher"...
