École ITALIENNE vers 1600
A young man caught between the angel of good counsel and the angel of seduction, under the guise of a young woman. The first shows her on her right the gate to heaven, Porta Coeli, through the reminder of the ascent to Christ's Calvary and the imitation of the saints; on the left, the seductress, adorned with her finery, invites her to the pleasures of the table, which only lead to the Gate of Hell, Porta Inferno, and its eternal fires. Oil on copper. Legend in Italian in golden letters. 17 x 22 cm. Carved and gilded wooden frame with flowers and foliage motifs. Rare Christian adaptation of the ancient theme, Hercules' choice between Virtue and Will (Cf. Erwin Panofsky, Hercules at the Crossroads; Hercules Prodicius, IV - VIII. Paris 1999).
