Mikhail LARIONOV (1881–1964) & Natalia Sergeyevna GONCHAROVA (1881–1962)
Double sheet; the front of the first sheet is painted in watercolor and ink, with an annotation in the upper left corner in Italian: “Saluti Karo Dottore!!!” and signed in the lower right corner: “Michel Larionoff. ” On the front of the second sheet is a handwritten letter signed in Italian, most likely from the doctor’s daughter: “Dearest little papa (?), here is the promised drawing that Larionoff created after printing the rays, and he will make others of the same kind. I find it very beautiful. Today, Mrs. Natalia gave me the “spring” plate, which is very beautiful, and as soon as the other one is ready, we’ll send them to you. But I’m afraid they might be too beautiful to be produced there. We’ll have to try having them made there and also at another factory. In the meantime, they’re working on them with immense passion for you, because they love you. They’ll make the four plates, two paintings, and the dining room furniture. I’ll give them your letter, which will make them very happy. And please take heart in the face of this painful loss (?), which I still cannot understand. He was a friend with whom we might sometimes disagree on our thoughts and ideas, but who was always loyal and steadfast in his friendship. I’m sending you the letter his father sent me—I had telegraphed him. With a thousand and a thousand endless kisses. Olga (?)”, on the back of the second sheet is a handwritten letter signed by Natalia Goncharova in French addressed to the doctor: “Dear Doctor, we received your card, which brought us great joy. We thank you very much for the warm feelings you have for us. It will also be a great pleasure for us to know that one of us will be visiting you, because we have great affection for you. I’d like to try to paint a picture based on the postcard you sent. Goodbye, I hope to see you soon. N. Gontcharova.”
