Rectangular glass snuffbox with small cut corners, imitating moss agate and gilded brass mounting.
Painted, probably in a second stage, with three scenes of aerostats with gondolas in flight.
The hinged lid depicts the departure of a hot-air balloon from a town square lined with high-gabled houses, in the presence of a group of people.
The scenes on the reverse of the lid and bottom depict aerostats above lakeside landscapes.
The sides are decorated with polychrome flower friezes on a black background.
Inside, imitation moss agate glass (unpainted).
FRANCE, late 18th-early 19th century.
19 x 74 x 45 mm.
Wear, scratches, small chips and restorations to the decorations and rabbet (base and lid slightly dislocated); some oxidation.
In a pale green shagreen case with burgundy velvet lining (wear, small tears above hinges).

The high gables of the houses in the scene on the lid are reminiscent of a town in northern France.
Is this a naive interpretation of the aerostatic ascent of Jean-Pierre Blanchard and Chevalier Joseph Paris de l'Espinard from the Champ de Mars in Lille on August 26, 1785?
This flight, known from the Louis Watteau painting [Musée de l'Hospice Comtesse, Lille], took place in an area not bordered by houses, for obvious safety reasons.
