ELISABETH de France, known as Madame Elisabeth (Versailles 1764-Paris 1794) Landscape with a mill or a game of boules. Round gouache. Signed at the bottom and dated Elisabeth de France 1783. Diameter: 18.5 cm. Antique gilded oak frame with string-of-pearls motif (wear, small dents, some cracks). Remake of a model of similar dimensions (Diam.: 18 cm) attributed to Henri Désiré van Blarenberghe (Lille 1734-Paris 1812), from a Pierpont Morgan sale (1935) and, more recently, from Kornfeld (Bern). Henri Désiré was orphaned at an early age and raised by his brother Louis-Nicolas van Blarenberghe (Lille 1716 - Fontainebleau 1794). After a stay in Paris (1769-1778), he moved to Versailles with his son Henri-Joseph (Lille 1750 - id. ; 1826) (Cf. Monique Maillet-Chassagne and Irène de Château-Thierry, Catalogue raisonné des œuvres des Van Blarenberghe 1680-1826 ; Lille 2004). It is in this Versailles circle that the author of the model is most likely to be found, taken up with great finesse and precision by Elisabeth de France, sister of Louis XVI, known for her taste in drawing and her association with artists (Cf. Anne Bernet, Madame Elisabeth : Sœur de Louis XVI, Paris 2013).
