Attributed to Paul BRIL (Antwerp 1554-Rome 1626)
Landscape with ancient ruins in the Roman countryside with shepherds and their animals.
Oil on canvas.
55 x 69.5 cm.
Wooden frame and gilded stucco with shells and floral scrolls. Damage and missing parts.
Some restorations, notably to the left in the sky.

To be compared with Paul Bril's landscapes with rural scenes from his Roman period (circa 1615 - 1620), such as those in the museums of Rodez and the Louvre (Cf. Francesca Cappelletti, Paul Bril e la pittura di paesaggio a Roma 1580-1630; cat. nos. 131-133, pp. 286-288; Fig 152, p. 168, cat. no. 159, p. 33, fig. 132, p. 168-Roma 20025-2006).

Federico Zeri described Paul Bril's Paysage du Latium in Genoa, which is very similar to the one in the Louvre, in terms entirely applicable to our composition, "... the rendering of the Roman countryside, even in its most deserted and abandoned corners, reveals castles, towers and peasants' houses, encircled by azure mountains, which have been built throughout history, in the succession of seasons" (Le mythe visuel de l'Italie, fig.50, pp.51 & 52 - Rivages 1986)
