FRANCE, 19th century Infantry officer's saber, model 1821. Gilded brass hilt with two branches, central ring adorned with flowers, and leafy stock quillon. Wooden buttstock covered with black leather and twisted brass filigree. Curved, single-edged blade with two hollow sides, blued on the first third, with engraved and gilded decoration on the heel, on both sides, of a flaming pomegranate and two crossed branches, flat-backed, ending in a counter-edge. Later engraving above the grenade, forming a flag with a cruciform motif. Black leather scabbard with two brass fittings. Blade length: 70 cm - Total length: 85 cm. As is; wear to gilding and leather; blade cleaned, wear to blade bluing, point sanded, some oxidation; brass tarnished and scabbard leather cracked and missing. This saber was also used by the National Guard.
