SCHOOL OF QUINTEN MASSYS (OR METSYS) (ANTWERP OR LOUVRAIN 1766-AROUND 1530) Adoration of the Magi. Oil on panel. Oak. 48.8 x 38 cm. Gilded wood frame with two old cartouches: Kulmbach (Hans van). Provenance : On the reverse a large collector's red wax seal (acc.), affixed to a leaf with the handwritten name in pen Wagner, and below "pupil of"; with two old French-language public auction catalog labels: Hans van Kulmbach, l'Adoration des Rois Mages. General bibliography: Max J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting (vol. VII) Quentin Massys, Plate 58, 59 a - e, text p. 66 (New York 1971). The attributions on these two labels refer to Hans Suess von Kulmbach (Kulmbach c. 1480 - Nuremberg c. 1522), a pupil of Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528). A version identical to our Adoration of the Magi, in the City Art Museum of St. Louis (Missouri, USA), is catalogued by Max. J Friedländer as "After Q. Massys", who lists four other versions or copies. Our composition can be compared with the Adoration of the Magi by Gérard David (1450/1460 - 1523) in the Munich Pinakothek (c. 1490 - 1495), for the two very similar angels above the seated Virgin under the arched opening in the stone wall (Cf. Hans J. Van Miegroett, Gérard David, n° 41 & 44, p. 63 - 66 - Antwerp 1989).
