JAPAN, Satzuma, late 19th or early 20th century Pair of earthenware vases with polychrome and gold decoration of figures on terraces, in rectangular cartouches on fields decorated with gilded knotted fillets and polychrome patchwork. European bronze and brass mounts with gadrooned necks and openwork quadripod bases decorated with cartouches. Blackened metal mounts. Zinc-lined interiors. H. 38.1 cm. Some wear and stains, notably on the mounts. These vases were assembled to hold European kerosene lamp reservoirs.
