Emile FRIANT (1863-1932) Seated man and child in a palm grove. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 74 x 58 cm. Two tiny holes, minor edge wear. The Association Emile Friant (A.E.F.) has confirmed the authenticity of the painting, which will be included in the catalog raisonné currently in preparation. We would like to thank Madame Pascale Pavageau for confirming the authenticity of this painting, and for pointing out the existence of two very similar drawings in a sketchbook of Orientals kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, possibly preparatory to the painting. Friant made several trips to North Africa, first to Tunisia in 1887, then to Algeria in 1890 and 1892 (see publications by Jean-Sébastien Bertrand in passionemilefriant - Instagram, who kindly provided us with information on the dating of this painting, which he places during the 1892 trip).
