British East India Company, circa 1840. Socket bayonet with triangular blade, from a Brown Bess-type percussion cap rifle, often used by Gurkha troops attached to the British army. Socket with bead at base. Calligraphic inscriptions on heel and socket, with Lion. Blade length: 39 cm - Total length: 51 cm. Condition of use; cracks in the metal, some weakening; a few scratches and bumps; old brass soldering at the base of the socket; some oxidation. The Lion has been the Company's symbol since 1808, before the use of the Heart. This type of bayonet was often made in Nepal, from 1816 onwards, after Nepal came under British influence.
